Shudu Lake (Shuoduhai Lake)
Located to the northeast of Shangri-La, Shudu
Lake is 43 km away from the city. The lake is 3705 meters above
sea level and is one of the biggest lakes in Shangri-La covering
an area of 15 square kilometers. Now it has been turned into a
highland pasture resort.
Shu means cheese in Tibetan; du means stone.
An ancient legend has it that an eminent monk who roamed from
place to place arrived at the lake one day and the herdsmen shared
their food and a local cheese with the monk. The eminent monk
was happy to observe the bountiful pastureland around the lake,
so he said the following prayer: "May the good cheese of
this region remains as firm as stone forever". From then
on the name of Shudu Lake came into being.
Bita Lake and Shudu Lake are close to each other,
and together they form special scenery in Pudacuo National Park,
displaying different flavors of beauty.
Shudu Lake is sheer clear. The lake is abundant
for a special species of golden carp with a line right across
the body. Around the lake, there are dense forests of fir spruce
and birch. In autumn, with the white birch forests all turning
